GEDCOM Tags Supported By Ancestral Author

Ancestral Author has been designed to read the latest GEDCOM 5.5 standard, which is the format output by most genealogy programs. The GEDCOM 5.5 format stores genealogical information in tags, which are short mneumonics for items of genealogical interest. For example, the 'NAME' tag is used to store the name of an individual. The 'BIRT' tag stores birth information, etc. Our goal for the development of Ancestral Author is to support all the GEDCOM tags that appear in our customer's GEDCOM files; toward that end we are continuously adding support for additional tags. Note that the GEDCOM format is organized in a hierarchy of tags. Some tags are placed underneath others, and contain information specifically related to the tag above it. For example, the 'INDI' tag contains information about an individual, and has a number of tags underneath it that contain the details, such as the name ('NAME'), birth information ('BIRT') for that individual, etc. We denote these nested tags as a sequence of tags separated by periods. Here is the tag notation for an individual, his/her name, birth date, and birth place:
